Save Our Future
Along with other families who have lost a loved one to the Cleveland police, I, Alicia, was a core leader and writer of Citizens for a Safer Cleveland’s Issue 24 campaign. The campaign successfully passed a City of Cleveland charter amendment ballot measure in the November 2021 election that will create independent investigations into police misconduct and implement powerful community oversight over policing, with the goal of ensuring no other families ever have to grieve a loved one’s needless murder at the hands of Cleveland police.
Save Our Future activities include:
– Arts –
Engagement with visual arts provide creative expression which stimulates cognitive growth and improves critical thinking.
– Health and wellness –
Learning to take care of yourself is a lesson that will carry through the lifespan and is the first step of prevention with many health issues.
– Culinary Arts –
Being able to nourish yourself will not only save money it also encourages family involvement and provides access to healthy meals to improve quality of life.
– Knowing Your Rights –
The lives of youth can be full of uncertainty, knowing the law and their rights within it will enable youth to make good choices.
– Workforce Readiness –
Our youth face many pressures concerning their future. Public education is a foundation in life success but our youth need more tools and skills to enter the workforce at graduation. Character in Leadership – The youth need us to set the model of leadership in discipline, communication, equity and liberation, so they can learn to lead themselves.
Healing Spaces for Grieving Families
Monthly brunches for grieving parents who have lost children to police brutality and gun violence. The Angelo Miller Foundation intends to create a space for parents to support and uplift one another. Spaces will be hosted by Alicia Kirkman who lost her son, Angelo, to police violence when he was only 17 years old. Please email angelomillerfoundation@outlook.com if you would like to attend.
